Well, the problems I have against sony and the PS2 are:
1. They hype everything and sell stuff for the name (look at how did the PS2 sell before having any good games and being so bad).
2. They use nasty practices like buying the media in every country, manipulating news agencies in every possible way, and bribing companies to cancel games when they were going to hurt them.
3. They made a poorly designed, inferior system with poor quality components (from DVD drive to the fan).
4. They won the first market war with an inferior system, and because of that, the RPGs we love don't look as brilliant as they could. I just want the best, I don't care for the name printed on a box like the mainstream market do. And the Dreamcast was a better, cheaper, and better established system. If sony hadn't hyped the console and the crappy games it was launched with, taking advantage of its position and undeserved fame, nor they had used predatory, lowly market practices, users would have seen things as they were; and with more support, important companies like Square-Enix or Namco would have finally switched over to a better platform. The result: Xenosaga would have had textures on walls and no cheap FMVs to fake in-game cut-scenes the PS2 couldn't handle nor we would be paying for a DVD9 disc; FFX would have been high-res; FFX-2 would have had mip-mapping for textures to not look like a swarm of ants; strategy parts in games like Suikoden wouldn't feature such an unstable image; the Shenmue saga would have gotten the recognition it deserved and we would be playing Shenmue 3 on a Dreamcast by now; we would be playing Kingdom Hearts in 60 Hz in Europe; racing games wouldn't look like ass, etc.
Of course sega helped sony a lot, fucking up their own product from the very day it was launched, with <s>such bad</s> total absence of marketing; and I don't mean ads, I mean the complete market study process which is much more than having four imbeciles saying stuff on TV. microsoft screwed them as well because sega didn't learn that no company can sell their soul to microsoft and remain unscrewed (think Apple, IBM, Spyglass, SCO......); and Nintendo had a great hardware but didn't come up with a proper marketing either, and they focused on making a console for kids and that's what they got ? kids.
So what did we got for RPGs? Low-res graphics with sucky textures, unstable picture, low durability, an sucky control pad... We could be doing better with other systems. I'm just sad because now the PS2 is the de facto standard for RPGs, when technology is much more advanced than that, and some scenes in my favorite games don't shine as much as they could in the technical department.
Anyways, I'm not a fanboy of any kind; no game company pays me and all I want is the best RPGs, so I got a PS2, which by now reads like crap so I'm probably gonna dump it and buy another one, I don't care; all that matters to me is good RPGs ^_^. And if by any chance Square-Enix, Game Arts, Namco, and others decided one day they have to dump the PS2 and work for the Xbox for some stupid reason, don't doubt I'll go buy one of Billy's low-end PCs (mine is twice as fast) the very week the first important RPG gets released for that system. Since that's not gonna happen, I'll stick to sony and buy a PS3 when it gets released. I don't care if it's good or bad; it's going to have the games I love. As Cataferal said, this is how many RPGers feel.
And in a way, I really hope the PS3 really kicks ass technically-wise, and I can stop bitching about their bad systems, since sony's gonna hype it and bribe everybody again; the PS3 is going to get the big RPG companies' support, and we'll be playing our next RPGs in that system. So it better be good, I want to see Shion's ass in high resolution this time XD .
